Assuming Elvarg has no hidden weakness, I suspect melee is easier simply because Elvarg uses her dragonfire less often when you are in melee range. Dragonfire does a lot more damage than her melee attacks, and it drains prayer. Staying in melee range let me pray melee for the whole fight, and I managed to beat her with about 20 tunas. You can kill Elvarg without getting hit aside from setup if you flinch it with melee. It might work with range on rapid too? Or, you could have somebody weaken Elvarg for you and then finish him off.
